The fourth season of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ began streaming on Disney+ late this August and, as before, our beloved trio – Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) – return with their usual blend of humour, mystery and self-awareness. This time, the murder mystery takes an interesting twist with new celebrity cast members.
Following the shocking end of Season 3, where Charles’ long-time friend and stunt double Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) is mysteriously shot. Their investigation this season, as per usual, involves film stars and industry insiders, adding a fresh Hollywood backdrop. This season adds stars like: Zach Galifianakis, Eugene Levy, and the famous Eva Longoria, as well as other celebrity guests like Kumail Naijani, into their world.
This season follows the show’s typical formula by blending heartfelt moments, sharp comedy, and, of course a “whodunit” that is central to the show. Season 4 focuses on expanding upon the personal lives of the trio, and in particular adds to the already established romance between Oliver and Lorretta (played by Meryl Streep). The character dynamics stay consistent, especially as Mabel navigates her own complex feelings about the team and her place in the spotlight. Though the show sticks to its familiar murder mystery structure, it carries itself with self-awareness, and, in doing so, refreshingly doesn’t take itself too seriously. The Hollywood setting and new suspects keep the plot fresh and engaging for returning fans.
