Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot- stomping biopic celebrating the life and musical success of his majesty, the King of rock, Freddie mercury, and his fellow band consorts Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, who produced killer music and put other artists under pressure as they dominated the musical scene. The title ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is derived from the blasphemous 6-minute song (almost 7!) that destroyed international charts due to its enchanting, fantastical essence mixed with its rebellious operatic section, along with ambiguous, touching lyrics whose true meaning was only known to Mercury himself.
Bismillah! It’s a kind of magic…
The biopic itself focuses on Queen’s rise to fame and the challenges the band faced, especially concerning Mercury’s sexuality, drug abuse, and fractured relationships which in turn, along with his remarkable talent, made Mercury one of the most beloved musical entertainers on the planet. It is a beautiful story of fellowship, forgiveness and fame consisting of humour throughout. However, the film would bite the dust if it weren’t for the absolutely incredible soundtrack, which relates to people on a personal level as for many, these were the songs of their childhoods, first loves, teenagerhood and everything in between.
Rami Malek brings an amazing impersonation of Mercury: his replication of movement and charisma capture the essence of the iconic persona, making the audience feel as though they can touch the unreplaceable atmosphere of a Queen concert. It is inspiring and manages to break a strong stigma around AIDS, which in the end led to a ground-breaking tribute concert which raised £8 million. Joseph Mazzello, Ben Hardy, and Gwilym Lee also bring a vibrant energy that complements Malek’s performance, effectively advertising how their passion and talent for music became a once in a lifetime phenomenon.
Overall, I would rate this Biopic as a 10/10 and perfect for a relaxing cinema night at home (make sure you have some tissues!) to break free from a hectic day and relax like a cool cat.
Afterall, the show must go on…
