By Tanishka (Y12)

I look in the mirror in front of me,

I see nothing but a face full of smiles,

And eyes twinkling with happiness and glee.

Behind youthful me, the white, marble tiles.

But this is younger me, with not a thought about anything;

No worries, no fear, for life has just started,

Relaxing in my surroundings, taking whatever people bring,

In a familiar world, where everyone I know is kind and warm-hearted.

But having left the door I now realise, the change-

The world is so different to what I was used to,

Everyone has hearts of stone; no-one seems pleased

With what they have been given to call life.

And suddenly, the most comfortable places are underground,

Where no-one sees you, not even yourself, definitely not yourself,

And you forget what you look like, only your imagination presides.

And there you are, wishing.

Your room, the mirror, and tiles,

And wanting to go back to your old self,

In your world,

Twinkling eyes and smiling face.

But you’re gone…
