Contemporary art, especially in the form of abstract paintings, has created grounds for many debates about its validity in the past few years, with both sides passionately arguing their point of view. But why is that the case? What is so controversial about this new art form?

Moreover, Art has evolved and transformed immensely over time: from Papyrus paintings from Ancient Egypt to Medieval Portraiture to Stained Glass Artworks to Picasso’s Cubism, and that’s not covering even a thousandth of the various artforms still present today. And society has always rejected new or different ideas in the past, just for them to reveal themselves to be truly spectacular. Perhaps the true beauty surrounding this art form will become clearer with time to more people.

In addition, many viewers (including myself) struggle to observe the deep, philosophical intent put into an artwork consisting of dots and lines. This opinion has only augmented in recent years due to several (both amusing and serious) controversies over new artworks in museums. A popular example is that I’m sure you’ve all heard of was the commotion surrounding the banana taped to the wall of Perrotin Gallery as a legitimate artwork on display. If you haven’t, you may be shocked to find out that a single banana sold for over $120,000!

I, myself, am not an expert in abstract paintings, and hence can’t understand the meaning behind many pieces of abstract art. At the end of the day, art is subjective, and everyone views it differently. That is the beauty of all art forms, is it not? And where you and I may see messy scribbles and meaningless blobs of paint, someone else may see a truly phenomenal piece of art.
