We love the holidays, heatwaves and sunshine but it could cause damage to our skin; the extra sun exposure can cause sunburns and the humidity can result in clogged pores. But, by using the right products and taking care of your skin, you can prevent these from happening and get the summer skin of your desires.

The most important skincare step is of course SPF. Using SPF to protect your skin is so important as the UV rays are more intense during summer, so you should always use SPF to protect your skin from UV damage. It is also crucial to use the right type for your skin type and you should avoid using too much; half a teaspoon is the perfect amount for your face and neck, and you should also top up throughout the day. SPF is a must for summer! Examples of different sun creams are Soltan Protect and Moisturise Lotion SPF30, Avène Very High Protection Tinted Sun Cream SPF50+ for Dry Sensitive Skin and Bondi Sands Hydra UV Protect SPF50+ Body Lotion.

For those who wear makeup, the heat of the UV rays all day will melt your foundation and this can clog your pores and can result in unwanted bacteria on your face. To help this, use a face mask- charcoal masks are best for clearing pores- 1-2 times a week to help unclog those pores and keep your skin clear. Some recommended face masks are The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask and the Avon Clearskin Charcoal Face Mask with Shine Control.

Another necessity in your summer skincare routine is cleansing in the morning and night. Especially during summer, this is significant as we sweat more and are outside more, so this exposes our skin to more bacteria. This also helps to maintain unclogged pores from makeup, bacteria and dirt. Again, it’s better to use a cleanser best for your skin type; humid weather may trigger more oil production than needed, which can result in blackheads, so you should use a cleanser that targets blemishes and blackheads. You similarly want to cleanse your face properly by not using too harsh of a cleanser and not scrubbing your skin as this can cause irritation. Double cleansing is also recommended in the summer as it ensures your skin is thoroughly cleansed of any impurities. Cleansers suggested for all skin types are the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin and the Olay Total Effects 7-in-One Foaming Cleanser. The cleansers best for oily skin are the KraveBeauty Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser and the Peach Slices Oil Control Balancing Cleanser.

The next tip is hydration as being out in the sun can dehydrate our skin. Well-hydrated skin is healthier, brighter and less prone to ageing and vitamin C serums are great for hydration and brightening of the skin, but any serums are excellent for hydration. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, the La Roche-Posay Vitamin C, and the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum are examples of helpful serums.

Moisturiser is a staple in your skincare routine all year round but in summertime, you may want to use more of a lightweight moisturiser because you don’t need to use a rich cream as you do in winter. These lighter creams also are great for maintaining hydration. An excellent hack is to keep your moisturiser in the fridge- this can give you an instant refresh and will keep you cool during a heatwave. A lightweight moisturiser recommended by many is the Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer and the E45 Daily Non-Greasy 465 Moisturising Lotion for Dry Skin.

If you choose to apply makeup, during summer you will undoubtedly want to go lighter on the makeup as in the warmer temperatures, wearing lots of makeup may feel unnecessary. Instead, you can either use less makeup (thinner layers or less product) or instead of foundation you could use a tinted moisturiser as these are much simpler and more convenient for summer.

Overall, you should keep your skincare routine and makeup as simple as possible; less is more! During summer you don’t need to layer many products, so using less is more effective. The main tips to follow are to use SPF daily and top throughout the day, cleanse twice a day and use face masks to maintain clear pores and the perfect clear skin for summer.
